Lead Teaching Artist Position Available: In-House Residency Short Filmmaking Workshop Series

The Michaels Daughter Foundation is seeking a qualified Lead Teaching Artist for an exciting new project with the support of the California Arts Council. This in-house residency short filmmaking workshop series will partner with two Los Angeles County schools to provide a unique and empowering experience to Middle and High School age groups.

Qualifications:

Minimum 3 years of teaching artist experience
At least 5 years of experience as a professional theater artist: playwright, actor, and/or director
Sensitivity to school cultures and experience teaching in a school setting
Passionate about empowering learners of all ages as playgoers, creators, critical thinkers
Skilled facilitator of learning with strong oral and written communication skills
Available for Summer Training Session and Fall 2023 Program
Must have reliable transportation to travel to and from school sites and organizations in Carson, CA and Van Nuys, CA; Los Angeles County
Must be able to teach 5 weekly classes, plus attend virtual bi-weekly staff meetings
Ideal candidate has experience developing arts-based curriculums for Middle and High School youth

Script writing/creative writing experience (short film format)
Filmmaking skills
Social justice knowledge and background
Well-organized with great creative instincts
Strong leadership skills and the ability to delegate responsibilities effectively

Responsibilities:

Oversee the execution of the program and the creation of 6 short films (3 per each school site) with the program director and teaching artists
Lead teaching artists and classes during the Fall semester when needed
Facilitate bi-weekly check-ins with teaching staff, program manager, and Executive Director/Board
Facilitate interviews with guest speakers/artists
Provide creative guidance to other teaching artists and be available for creative questions
Not required to attend all classes, but must be available for the training sessions, some class sessions, filming sessions, guest speaking sessions, and culminating event


About the Classes and Programs:
The My Message to the World (Van Nuys Location) and My New Story (Carson Location) workshops will consist of a minimum of 20 sessions and 1 culminating event during the fall semester, serving a minimum of 20 participants at each location. Led by Executive Director Ciera Payton and MDF Program Director, teaching artists will guide participants in creating their original short films. Additional filmmakers will facilitate filming and editing while also sharing and giving exposure to the post-production process of filmmaking. Guest speakers from the film and TV industry will serve as voices of encouragement, inspiration, and empowerment. The workshop culminates with participants presenting their short films in person and/or virtually at a theatrical red carpet screening.

Goal:
Create 3 short films that will help students to share the stories they want to see. These stories will act as a personal manifesto and/or affirmation over their present and future.
